A Closed-Form Nonlinear Model for the Constraint Characteristics of Symmetric Spatial Beams
نویسندگان
چکیده
The constraint-based design of flexure mechanisms requires a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the constraint characteristics of flexure elements that serve as constraints. This paper presents the constraint characterization of a uniform and symmetric cross-section, slender, spatial beam—a basic flexure element commonly used in threedimensional flexure mechanisms. The constraint characteristics of interest, namely stiffness and error motions, are determined from the nonlinear load–displacement relations at the beam end. Appropriate assumptions are made while formulating the strain and strain energy expressions for the spatial beam to retain relevant geometric nonlinearities. Using the principle of virtual work, nonlinear beam governing equations are derived and subsequently solved for general end loads. The resulting nonlinear load–displacement relations capture the constraint characteristics of the spatial beam in a compact, closedform, and parametric manner. This constraint model is shown to be accurate using nonlinear finite element analysis, within a load and displacement range of practical interest. The utility of this model lies in the physical and analytical insight that it offers into the constraint behavior of a spatial beam flexure, its use in design and optimization of 3D flexure mechanism geometries, and its elucidation of fundamental performance tradeoffs in flexure mechanism design. Buckling Behaviors of Symmetric and Antisymmetric Functionally Graded Beams
The present study investigates buckling characteristics of both nonlinear symmetric power and sigmoid functionally graded (FG) beams. The volume fractions of metal and ceramic are assumed to be distributed through a beam thickness by the sigmoid-law distribution (S-FGM), and the symmetric power function (SP-FGM). These functions have smooth variation of properties across the boundary rather tha...
متن کاملNonlinear Strain Energy Formulation to Capture the Constraint Characteristics of a Spatial Symmetric Beam
In the past, a beam constraint model (BCM) that captures pertinent geometric nonlinearities associated with large displacements has been proposed for slender spatial beams with uniform and symmetric cross-sections. By providing closedform parametric relations between the end-loads and enddisplacements of the beam, the BCM quantifies the constraint characteristics of the beam in terms of stiffne...

This article presents Navier type closed-form solutions for static bending, elastic buckling and free vibration analysis of symmetric functionally graded (FG) sandwich beams using a hyperbolic shear deformation theory. The beam has FG skins and isotropic core. Material properties of FG skins are varied through the thickness according to the power law distribution. The present theory accounts fo...

In this paper, a comparison of weak-form Galerkin and least-squares finite element models of Timoshenko beam theory with the von Kármán strains is presented. Computational characteristics of the two models and the influence of the polynomial orders used on the relative accuracies of the two models are discussed. The degree of approximation functions used varied from linear to the 5th order. In ...

In this paper, a robust model predictive control (MPC) algorithm is addressed for nonlinear uncertain systems in presence of the control input constraint. For achieving this goal, firstly, the additive and polytopic uncertainties are formulated in the nonlinear uncertain systems. Then, the control policy can be demonstrated as a state feedback control law in order to minimize a given cost funct...
